Summer is here and we are outside a lot more enjoying the beautiful weather! It’s hot in most places and our hair can feel dirtier a lot more quickly. Should we shampoo more often? Typically, the answer is no! If we shampoo too often our scalp will become unbalanced and no one wants an unbalanced scalp, right?! I did a blog post a while back, The Secret to a Healthy Scalp that you should check out here. So if we aren’t shampooing more often how do we combat the weather making our hair feel dirtier? Today I am giving you 3 Tips to Get the Best Results from Your Dry Shampoo!
I will be honest I used to think dry shampoo was for people in the hospital that couldn’t get out of bed and needed their hair shampooed. I know a lot of people can be hesitant to use it. But once you realize what a great tool it can be you will wonder why it took you so long to start using it!

What is the Purpose of Dry Shampoo
Let’s start with what it doesn’t do, it doesn’t clean your hair like a normal shampoo. The name is kind of deceiving, at least I think so! But what do they do? They are great at helping to absorb the oil, sweat, and grease on your scalp in between regular shampoos. They can also help to extend the life of your blowout and refresh your hair after a workout.
*Tip: Pay close attention to the ingredients in your dry shampoo. Some have flammable ingredients (butane & propane) in them. Along with human carcinogens like Benzene.
1. All you need is your dry shampoo and a hair dryer
This method is one of my favorite ones! I often use this method between shampoos to extend the life of my blowouts. In the morning I will section my hair and spray my dry shampoo and use my fingertips to massage it through my roots. I then use my blow-dryer on a cool setting along with a vent brush to lift the roots up. This helps to give me some volume and freshens all my hair up. This process works great!
You can also use this process after a workout or being outside on a hot day. It will help to absorb the sweat and oil on the scalp. The cool air and vent brush will dry and freshen up your hair. It works every time!
2. Sweet dreams!
Does the hair dryer method scare you off? It shouldn’t because you are using cool air, but you will love this method! Use your dry shampoo the evening prior to going to bed. Section your hair and spray like you normally would. Either put your hair up in a loose bun, ponytail, or braid and sleep in it. What this method does is allow the dry shampoo to work overnight. While you are sleeping the dry shampoo soaks up all the oil and dirt on the scalp and you are ready to go in the morning.
*Tip: Be cautious about what type of hair tie you use. I recommend a satin-wrapped tie, scrunchie, or coil to help avoid hair breakage. Also, try not to wrap your hair too tight or that can cause hair breakage also. I did a blog post, 5 Things We Do Daily That Might Be Causing Hair Breakage that you can check out here.
3. Give me a little texture, please!
Dry shampoo is a great tool to use if you need a little added texture or volume in your hair. I love to “tease” or backcomb my hair a little bit and you can spray a little dry shampoo at the roots to help boost it. Another trick is after you curl your hair or if you need a little extra volume in your hair, just tilt your head over to the side and lift your hair up and spray dry shampoo. This will give your hair some volume. I often use a product that Monat has called Dry Texturing Spray. It is like dry shampoo and hair spray had a baby. It gives you the perfect mix of texture and hold that you need. Click here if you want more information on that product.

Extra dry shampoo tips to get the best results:
- Most dry shampoos need to be shaken well prior to use. Always read the directions prior to use.
- Make sure that you are not holding your dry shampoo too close to your scalp. Most you need to hold 10-12 inches from your scalp. If you are holding it too close, you will get a high concentration in one spot and you will not get the result that you are looking for plus you risk getting buildup. Depending on what type of ingredients you are using.
- Section your hair to get the maximum benefit. If you need to use a clip to help with this, then please do! I just use my fingers or a rattail comb. Typically, the areas that are the worst are the nape of your neck and around your hairline. Not every spot on your head may need it, it is okay to “spot treat” your hair/scalp.
- Keep it moving! While you are spraying your dry shampoo make sure you are moving the bottle, you don’t want to get a high concentration in one spot.

My favorite dry shampoo
I have a favorite dry shampoo that I use, there are many out there that you can choose from. My recommendation is that you look at ingredients like I mentioned earlier to you. I have been using Monat’s The Champ for a few years now because of its ingredients and it works amazing! If you want more information on it you can check it out here.
