Most women with fine hair struggle most of their lives trying to add volume to their hair. Or they get the volume but can’t get it to last. I mastered volume for fine hair; it doesn’t matter whether you have short or long hair. So, I am sharing 3 ways to add instant volume to hair.
I am an 80s girl and have loved volume most of my life! And I can remember my mom yelling at me for using too much hair spray as a teenager! I have tamed the volume down, but I still have to have some in my hair. My hair is fine in texture, but I have a lot of it. Aging has affected my hair a lot. I did a blog post on how aging can affect our hair; you can read that here.

1. Add Volume Using a Root Volumizing Iron
I discovered this amazing tool several months ago, which has changed my hair-styling life! I am a teaser, which can sometimes cause breakage if you aren’t careful in how you comb it out. Using a root volumizing iron has cut back on my teasing.
So, what is a root volumizing iron? It is like a flat iron but instead has a waffle-like plate. Kind of like a crimper but not exactly. I use mine on wash days after blow-drying my hair. It holds until the next time I wash my hair. I just need to use my Champ Dry Shampoo between washes to fluff it back up. The iron adds texture to your root area that gives your hair the volume it needs. And the hold! Amazing.
How-To Use a Root Volumizing Iron
- Always make sure you have heat protectant on your hair. This will help protect your hair from any heat damage.
- Section off your hair. You do not want to see the texture pattern through your hair. You may have to experiment with your hair with what works best.
- I make sure I leave a 1” section around my face(hairline) and in the part of my hair. This gives me enough hair to cover the texture pattern.
- Use small sections, I use about ¼” to ½” thick sections and ½” wide. The smaller the section the better and the more even result you will get.
- I start at the top and work my way down. I use a duck bill click to click up the hair that has been texturized by the iron.
- After you finish with each section, I let down the clip and spray with a dry texturizing spray. That will help hold and add more volume.

2. Add Volume by Blow Drying Your Hair
One of the best ways to add volume to your hair is to blow dry your hair. I don’t know how many times in my years as a hairstylist I had clients upset that they didn’t have any volume or style to their hair, and they refused to blow dry their hair. It is a must if you want volume in your hair.
The first thing you need to do is start with great products! A volume lifter at the roots or a mouse. I have recently been using a mouse on my roots in the crown area and it has made a big difference. Also always use a heat protectant. Yes, even when blow-drying. Try not to use a high heat when blow drying your hair. Medium or low heat is best. It will take a little longer, but it will help prevent heat damage.
Start off by blow-drying your hair upside down. This lifts the hair off the scalp. Once you have some moisture out of the hair switch to using a vent brush or a round brush. This also helps to lift the hair off the scalp and give it volume and direction. I like to over-direct my hair. So, if you like to part your hair on the left use your brush to direct the hair over to the right side of your head. When it is finished drying flip it back over to your normal part and your hair will have a lot more volume.
Tip:
If you aren’t good with a round brush grab yourself one of those blowout brushes. They are great and once you practice a few times you will love them! Just make sure you get about 50% of the moisture out of your hair prior to using it for the best results. You never want to start using it with soaking wet hair.
3. Add Instant Volume By Switching Your Hair Part
This is a tip that you can do right now and will be shocked at the results. If you always wear your hair parted to the left switch the part to the right. You will instantly have increased volume. I have done this and am surprised every time with the results. But I am a creature of habit and it kind of drove me crazy having my hair parted on a different side! But that is just me, lol! Give it a try and let me know if it works for you!
Do you have fine hair and struggle with getting volume? Or do you get volume and can’t get it to last? Try the root volumizing iron and you will have volume for days! Please let me know in the comments if you have tried it and what your thoughts are!
