Has your mom ever asked you if you want to go on a car ride and you end up at the vet’s office? Not only the vet’s office but left with a plastic cone on your head?! Let’s just say that I have had the worst week of my life. I’m going to tell you about how my car ride turned into me wearing a cone of shame.
I’m not always a fan of car rides but I get to go with my pawrents so it’s never a bad thing. Well, that was until this week. I could sense that something was off that morning. Mom and Dad were being extra nice to me. They are always nice but extra and they wouldn’t let me drink any water or eat my breakfast. I should have known then that we weren’t leaving for another adventure like when we went to the Florida Keys. You can read about that here.

Mom Just Left Me There
I was in complete disbelief on that dreaded morning. Mom was talking to a nice lady at my doctor’s office and suddenly, she ripped me from my mom’s arms. Not only did she rip me from her arms, but she took me in a back room and my mom just left me there with strangers.
I was shocked because my mom never leaves me anywhere except when I have a spa day. But on those days, she comes back in just a few hours. This day was so much worse! There was poking, prodding, pulling, and cutting.
They gave me some medicine and I don’t remember much after that besides missing several things from my body when I woke up. They pulled a baby tooth, put a chip in me in case someone decides to steal me, and did this thing called neutering.
To make everything worse, when I woke up, I had a plastic cone wrapped around my neck. I refuse to wear a collar for my pawrents so this was unacceptable! My doctor’s office refused to take it off.

The Cone of Shame
When I woke up from the poking, prodding, pulling, and cutting to have this plastic cone wrapped around my neck I tried to pull it off. I couldn’t get it off and the doctor told me I needed to keep it on for 2 weeks. What?!
I don’t even wear a collar for my pawrents because I don’t like things around my neck, and they want me to wear what for 2 weeks? Not only was it uncomfortable but it was super embarrassing! I have only seen one friend in the neighborhood walking with one on. And now regret laughing at him. I owe him an apology.
My mom bought me a more comfortable cone to put around my neck. She switched it when we got home. She said it will be like having a pillow to lay on all the time. I told her, “How about you wear a pillow around your neck all of the time”. She understood why I was cranky.
The pillow cone my mom got me is a lot more comfortable and I can see where I am going. I am also able to eat and drink better than with the plastic one. Don’t tell my mom but it is like having a pillow with me everywhere I go! I have it linked below in case you want to get one!
Benefits of Neutering
My pawrents told me that all of this was because they love me. I told them that I didn’t need the microchip because I never plan on running away but they said they are worried about someone stealing me. Everyone keeps telling them how cute I am. My baby tooth wasn’t coming out on its own and it was starting to cause problems with my big tooth. It wasn’t so bad.
But why did I need to be neutered?
- The risk of testicular cancer is eliminated.
- Neutered dogs are better behaved and less aggressive. I personally don’t understand this one because I am the best-behaved dog in my neighborhood!
- Dogs have less of a desire to roam away from home. This in turn keeps them from getting hit by cars.
- You can read more information about spaying and neutering here.
I guess one good thing that came from this nightmare is that I am getting even more attention than normal from my mom and dad. Mom has been kissing and holding me extra! And since I can’t go on long walks for 2 weeks, she promised to push me in my stroller so I can get out of the house and get fresh air! I plan on getting her to continue this after 2 weeks. Wish me luck!
