It is officially unofficially summertime and that means more time out in the sun. Whether you live by the beach, are taking a vacation, going to the pool, or just out in the sun daily we must take care of our skin and prevent damage. Damage comes in a lot of different forms, skin cancer, wrinkles, age spots, scaly patches called actinic keratosis.
Most people can agree that a suntan looks good, but did you know that a tan is skin damage? It is damage to the top layer of your skin. The sun’s ultraviolet rays speed up the aging of our skin and raise your risk of skin cancer.
So, what can we do? We can try to improve what damage has been done already and prevent future damage. Let’s start with preventing the damage!

Prevent
Sunscreen is our #1 defense against skin damage. Do you use daily sunscreen on your face? I know we sometimes think we do not need it since we are not “laying out” in the sun we don’t need to wear one daily. It is recommended, and it will help to prevent wrinkles and fine lines. Who does not want that!! I use our Sun Veil Daily Mineral Protection SPF 30. It is a clean product and is a non-nano zinc oxide lotion. It is lightweight, fast-absorbing, and great for daily use!
Sunscreen is also important to use when spending time at the beach and pool or anywhere for any length of time. The FDA’s minimum recommendation is 30. Don’t forget to keep reapplying after being in the water and every couple of hours.
Wide brim hats or baseball caps! I love wearing a straw wide brim hat to the beach, monogram it and it is even better!! These help to keep the sun off our faces and prevent damage. Do not forget the sunglasses too!

Sun shirts and coverups! They make some great sun shirts nowadays for both men, women, and kids. Long sleeves, short sleeves, you name it! Some sun shirts have UV protection and others are made to be cooling. These would be great to wear in the yard if you are planning to work in the garden or do yard work. Do not overlook protecting yourself when doing this!

Treat
What do you do if made some poor choices in the past and have some sun damage? I know I am guilty of this! The first step is to go see your dermatologist and have a skin check! After you complete this and get a clean bill of health you can get to work on treating damage that has been caused by the sun.
Wrinkles can make you feel older than you are and let’s face it we all hate them! Age spots pop up before you know it, you do not have to be old to have them! I will admit that I have them! It seems like I got them overnight! There are ways to lighten them with the right products. Two of our products are great for that! Our C. Radiance Illuminating Serum and Botanic Bakuchiol Vegan Retinol Alternative.

Scaly patches called actinic keratosis are precancerous spots and are quite common. They are typically treated at your dermatologist’s office with cryotherapy (freezing). There are a few at-home treatments, but I would consult your doctor for those!
I wish I had taken sun safety a little more seriously earlier in my life. I had been made fun of in my childhood for being “too white”. They would call me Casper the Friendly Ghost or just plain say I was too white. These things stick with you and I have had a complex about my skin color since that time. So, I have tried to get sun by going to the tanning bed or laying out in the sun. I went to the dermatologist a few days ago to have a few spots looked at and he was not concerned with those but biopsied two others that I had not even thought twice about. It is never too late to start protecting your skin so we can keep seeing your beautiful face! Please share in the comments below any of your stories, I would love to hear them.
