It’s a new year and a great time to take advantage of your motivation to be organized! What does your bedroom closet look like? If you are like me, too many clothes. And maybe shoes! But I have the best closet organization hack for you! A few minutes today will give you amazing results later this year!
Raise your hand if you tend to hang on to clothes “just in case”? It has been a bad habit of mine and I have been working on it. When we moved last year, I weeded out a lot of clothes and either trashed them or gave them away. But I still kept too many with the thoughts of thinking I better keep them “just in case”. Well, not this year! I am implementing this process also!

Hanger Hack
This hanger hack is easy and works! I don’t know about you, but I like a cohesive look. So, I have all my clothes on matching hangers. My preference is to use black velvet, they keep your clothes from slipping off. For my blazers, I use wooden hangers because they are a little larger and help to give more support to them.
Starting today reverse all your hangers so the hanger is “backward” on the rod. After you wear a piece of clothing and go to put it back into your closet place the hanger back on the rod “normally”. It won’t take long for you to see what you have a habit of wearing and what you never wear.
What do I do with the clothes who hangers don’t move?
It will be up to you when you want to go through the clothes that have hangers that didn’t move. You could do it at the end of a season, every 6 months, or at the end of the year. I plan on doing it at the end of the year because our weather stays warm throughout the year.
I recommend you use the 3-box method when going through clothes whose hangers didn’t move. This method is part of a blog post I did a while back, My Top 5 Home Organizing Tips. You can read that here. But basically you will be deciding to either throw it out, give it away, or resell it. If your clothes are in good condition you can always try to make a little extra money by selling them on Poshmark. You can use my referral code: HELLO_SOUTH and receive $10 for signing up! Tips to organize your clothes
As you are moving your hangers today backward take a quick look to see if any of your clothes have any holes, rips, stains, or snags. And if they do just throw them out today! Also if you are hanging onto clothes that are no longer your size you might want to get rid of them now. How many times have you worn something you hung onto, or did it stay in style?
I like to organize my clothes by color, sleeve length, and style of clothes. To me, it just makes it easier to see what I have and choose clothes easier.
Categories:
- Tanks, T-shirts, Short sleeve tops – I like to arrange these by color and sleeve length.
- Long sleeve tops, Sweaters, Sweatshirts – These get grouped by color.
- Skirts and dresses – I arrange these by length and color.
- Pants – These get grouped by color.
- Blazers – These get grouped by color.
- Wraps, Shrugs, Shawls – These are also arranged by color.
I hope you enjoyed this idea and can use it to make your life easier. And maybe make room for some more clothes! Lol! Do you currently have any systems in place in your closet? Please share any comments below!
