Why I Stopped Eating Kibble

February 4, 2023 · Theo's Corner

Why I Stopped Eating Kibble

I had been eating kibble most of my life. I know that I am only 9 months old but still in dog years, that’s a long time! My mom and dad were getting worried about me because I got excited to eat but when I looked at my food I didn’t like to eat. This is my story of why I stopped eating kibble.

I know there are a lot of my friends out there that love their kibble. But I didn’t like mine. I would get excited when mom would ask me if I was hungry. And I would run over to my bowl only to look at it with disappointment. If I never see another small brown piece of kibble, it will be fine with me. I almost never ate breakfast. By dinner time I got hungry, so I ate some of my dinner. But usually not all of it.

We went down a rabbit hole.

When my mom saw that I wasn’t eating very much of my food she started to get worried. I was still sassy as ever though! Sit? What does that mean? That’s a topic for another day because my mom and dad have me in a training program…

My mom and I started to go down a rabbit hole of what was really in dog kibble. Have you ever looked to see how kibble is made? My mom and I did, and it made us sad. You can read more here if you want to. Sure they have regulations but one of them is that dog kibble can be made with animal feed grade ingredients. Feed grade? That means it is okay for me to eat but not you (humans).

It was becoming more and more clear why I didn’t want to eat my food every day. But I am surprised that I didn’t like it more because they spray kibble with coloring and flavoring to try and get us to like it. But I am too smart for that!

Where did kibble come from?

Turns out that my dog friends from a long time ago used to eat whatever their owners did. The idea of kibble started in the 1940s during WWII. Cereal companies started manufacturing dry pet food from leftover by-products and grains. Now I think I would like cereal!

In the 50s is when real kibble started being made. The “food” is sterilized and artificially preserved, and nutrients are degraded. I asked my mom why the food needs to be sterilized and she told me that I don’t want to know. She said that if you want to know you might want to start going down the rabbit hole too.

Mom says that there are still a lot of cereal companies still making dog food. I wonder if they make cereal in the same factory. Yum cereal.

What do I eat now?

So, after my mom and dad started getting worried about me not eating a lot they started researching fresh food. My mom thought about making me food herself. But since I am still a puppy, she didn’t think that was a good idea yet.

There are a lot of companies out there that make fresh food for puppies like me. They even deliver it to your front door so your mom doesn’t have to leave you alone. My mom and dad decided to go with The Farmer’s Dog. I have been eating fresh food for a few weeks now. If you want to read more about The Farmer’s Dog click here.

Do you know how I used to not eat breakfast in the morning? Turns out that I am a morning person after all! I eat my entire breakfast and dinner. My mom used to have to sit on the floor and coax me into eating. My mom sets the bowl down, walks away for a minute and it’s gone! And I am like, more, please! But she tells me that I can’t have more or I will get fat. She can be so rude sometimes.

I thank my mom and dad every day for my new food. I am so much happier. And I am ready for my walk in the morning right after eating! In case you missed my first post about daily walks and mean neighbors. You can read that here. I also get to pick between beef, chicken, turkey, and pork. No more of the same little brown pellets every day.

Are you tired of eating the same kibble every day? If you are, you should talk to your mom about switching to fresh food! Let me know in the comments what your favorite food is!
